Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA) is the main international airport serving the Island of Hawaii, in United States. It is located in Kalaoa, about 15 km away from Kona city centre, and serves Western Hawaii island, including the town of Kailua-Kona and the resorts of the North Kona and South Kohala districts. A bus ride between Kona Airport and Kailua-Kona city centre may take around 20 minutes. At KOA Airport you can find various bus options:

SpeediShuttle Service

You can find the service within the Baggage Claim area. It is a door to door service at fixed rate, which transfers to hotels, island locations like harbours, shopping districts and many other destinations. Hele-On buses

Provides direct service to Kona International Airport via the Pahala – Kona – South Kohala route, Monday to Saturday. There is one trip from Pahala, through Kailua-Kona and Ali’i Drive areas that arrives KONA International Airport at 8:25h. There is one trip from Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, The Fairmont Orchid, Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows, Hilton Waikoloa Village and Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka'upulehu departing at 7:15h arriving at the airport at 8:30h. The return buses departs Kona International Airport at Keahole at 8:30 a.m. and 4:50 p.m. for Pahala through Kailua-Kona and Ali’i Drive areas. The bus stop is unsigned and is located in front of the Astronaut Ellison S. Onizuka Space Center.

An alternative option is walk 1 mile to Route 19 and board Hele-On buses Keahole Airport Road by flagging the bus down. Another option is walk 1,4 miles to the intersection of Kaiminani Drive and Route 19 and at that intersection board an Intra-Kona route to get to Kailua-Kona. Due to traffic considerations, flag the bus on Kaiminani Drive.

Blue Hawaiian Helecopters Heliport

This is a limited service to the Blue Hawaiian Helecopters Heliport via the Hilo-South Kohala Resorts route. The trip departs Hilo at 5:05h and arrives at the Heliport at 7:05h. It then departs the Heliport in the afternoon at 16:10h and arrives in Hilo at 18:10h. Additional service is also provided by the North Kohala-South, Waikoloa Village-South Kohala Resorts – Waimea – Kailua – Kona route on Route 19 or Waikoloa Road.

Hilo – Kona International Airport from Keahole

Since there is no direct Hele-On bus service between Hilo and Kona International Airport at Keahole from Monday to Saturday, the best way to perform this trip is by taking a taxi to either Kmart in Kailua-Kona or Prince Kuhio Plaza bus shelter located on OhuOhu Street in Hilo and then board the Hilo-Kona route trip. Another option from Kona International Airport at Keahole is to take a taxi to the Hilton Waikoloa Village and transfer to the Hilo-South Kohala Resorts route to go to Downtown Hilo. Do the same in reverse to go from Hilo to Kona International Airport at Keahole. The one way Hele-On ticket costs 2$ (1$ extra for baggage). Passengers going to Hawai’I Volcanos National Park have the option of paying 12$ and entring directly to the Park, being the fee valid for seven days.
