1950s Early security concerns at the Kona Airport were very different than today’s global threats. In 1950, cattle were frequent and unwelcome visitors to the operating area at the airport. Airport managers responded by installing 5,000 feet of fencing to keep them out. By the late 1950’s, Kailua-Kona was a charming, sleepy and agriculturally rich resort town. A devout group of repeat visitors knew it as a place with an easygoing lifestyle, beautiful beaches and sunny weather. It was a relatively small group and frequent visitors found they could expect to be greeted at the local pub or grocery store by name.
