2000 and Beyond

In the post-September 11 world, there are new challenges that must be taken into consideration as the airport undergoes renovation.  Concerns for security and safety are at an all-time high at the same time that passenger volume has also peaked.  In addition, continued development in the region has made aircraft noise a more important issue than it has ever been before.

The current Master Plan and Noise Compatibility Plan update is needed if the airport is to cope with increased usage, forecasted growth and stricter aviation standards and safety requirements.  The state’s marching orders to the master planning team make it very clear that the unique atmosphere of the airport must be preserved as these new challenges are met.  Through community input and participation, the planning team is dedicated to update the airport to meet today’s needs while ensuring it maintains its special character as a gateway loved and admired by kama‘aina and visitors alike.
